Commissioner Christopher Stahley Resigns

Emmitsburg Town Commissioner Christopher Stahley has resigned, the mayor of Emmitsburg confirmed Tuesday.

Mayor William Carr said Stahley submitted a letter of resignation Sept. 11, citing job and home responsibilities.

Stahley could not be reached for comment. His telephone has been disconnected.

He was absent from the Sept. 10 town meeting, at which commissioners and staff discussed the penalties for commissioners who miss meetings.

Emmitsburg's town council comprises four commissioners plus the mayor.

Stahley was elected to a three-year term in April 2000, beating incumbent council president Philip Postelle. He works as an emergency communications specialist at the Frederick County Emergency Communications Center. Carr said Stahley's work schedule required a number of night shifts, causing him to miss meetings.

Carr said the town was scheduled to hold an executive board meeting Wednesday, where the town council will propose that David Vaughn serve out the remainder of Stahley's term. Vaughn ran for town commissioner in April's elections, placing third behind incumbents Clifford Sweeney and Patrick Boyle. In Stahley's place, he would serve until the April 2002 elections.

Vaughn said Tuesday that he was contacted by Carr the day after Stahley's resignation.

"I'm willing to take the spot," Vaughn said. "That way I can kind of show the people that I'll make a good commissioner."

Vaughn, 41, is a driver for Dairy Maid Dairy in Frederick. He is a lifelong resident of Emmitsburg and a member of the Vigilant Hose Co., the Knights of Columbus and a Moose lodge in Gettysburg, Pa.
