Introduction to Digital Photography (Session I): Bert Danielson, Instructor. Mondays, May 5-26, 4-6 p.m. For the individual who is new to digital photography and would like to understand the basics. This very popular class is held at two different times. A second class Introduction to Digital Photography (Session 2) will be held Mondays, June 2-23, 6-8 p.m.

Beaded Amulet Bags, Joh Ricci, Instructor. Tuesday, May 6, Tuesday, May 13, 5:30-8:30 p.m.; May 20, 6-8 p.m. This popular class teaches students to create a beaded amulet bag with Japanese glass seed beads using the Native American bead-weaving technique known as the peyote stitch.

The Art of the Hand-Sewn Pamphlet: From Composition to Keepsake, Kim Dana Kupperman, Instructor. Wednesdays, May 7-28, 6-8 p.m. For writers of all levels as well as aspiring bookbinders, this hands-on course explores the kinds of writing appropriate to pamphlet form, with students learning to fold and sew their work into a pamphlet-style book printed on acid-free paper.

Introduction to Calligraphy, Sheila Waters, Instructor, Thursdays, May 8-29, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Learn the tools, ink, paper and how to create beautiful lettering from a master calligrapher. You’ll learn the Foundational Hand and matching capitals; how to relate the Foundational Hand to other styles such as Gothic and Italic.

Drawing in Pen and Ink, Becky Brown, Instructor. Tuesdays, June 3-24, 6-8 p.m. Class includes discussion and experimentation using pens, papers, and techniques, then hands-on practice, with classes held at the IS classroom and, weather permitting, out of doors.

So You Want to be Published? A.D. Tarbox, Instructor. Thursdays, June 5-26, 6-8 p.m. Class helps writers learn to write an intriguing query, make the right revisions and find the publishers, editors, and agents who may be interested.

Colored Pencils, Amy Lindenberger, Instuctor. Fridays, June 6-27, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Using high-quality pencils and papers, students will find that they’re able to achieve a rich, painted effect with a high degree of detail. Learn color layering, blending, lifting, and how to create hard and soft edges.

Rolling out the Ink: Monotype Printmaking, Dorothea Barrick, Instructor. Monday-Thursday, June 9-12, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Students will learn a simple, non-toxic printmaking method using water-based inks to create one-of-a-kind prints using brushes, rollers, and Caran D'Ache crayons with plexiglass plates and printmaking paper. Classes will meet at the instructor’s  Carroll Valley studio.

Introduction to Acrylic Painting, Dorothea Barrick, Instructor. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 17-26, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. This popular class teaches the basics of painting with acrylics. Students will discover the versatility of water-based acrylics, experiment with color mixing, brush and palette knife applications, and create solid compositions.

Chainmaille Jewelry Making, Margery Erickson, Instructor. Wednesday, June 18 & Wednesday, June 25, 6-8 p.m. Make a beautiful bracelet and a set of earrings using rings of sterling silver in this decorative jewelry-making method. You'll learn proper tool use and care as well as how to finish your projects so they look professional.

Introduction to Watercolor Painting, Ron Schloyer, Instructor. Tuesdays, July 1-22, 6-8 p.m. Designed for beginning painters, this popular class includes an introduction to the materials and how to handle them, followed by hands-on painting in class.

Digital Photography: The Basics of Adobe Photoshop Elements, Bert Danielson, Instructor. Mondays, July 7-28, 6-8 p.m. This class teaches digital photo manipulation and enhancement using Adobe Photoshop Elements. You’ll learn how to improve digital photographic quality and alter digital photographs for artistic expression.

Telling Your Story: The Art of the Memoir, Cheryl Sobun, Instructor. Wednesdays, July 9-30, 6-8 p.m. You'll learn what you need to know to write a memoir that you, your children, and your grandchildren – perhaps even the world – will enjoy reading. Discover how to tap into your memories and write creatively.

Clay Sculpture, Lori Nelson, Instructor. Ages 10-adult (younger children welcome with parent or guardian). Thursdays, July 10 and 17, 6-9 p.m.; final class meeting to be arranged. Students will create one large sculpture project (a castle), or two smaller projects (animals, flowers, etc.) out of stoneware. Final class will be at the instructor’s studio to glaze the pieces. This is a great class for a parent-child team!

Porcelain Hand-Building for Kids and Adults, Jack Handshaw, Instructor. Kids ages 7 and up, with an adult. Wednesdays, June 11-July 2, 4:30-6:30 p.m. In this popular class students will construct high-fired porcelain pieces during the first three classes, then glaze them during the last class. Classes meet in the instructor’s studio near Fairfield. Great class for a parent-child team.

Introduction to Pastels, Holly McCabe, Instructor. Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27, 1-4 p.m. Students will learn different pastel-drawing techniques using chalk pastels, such as smudging and layering color. We’ll sketch some outdoor landscapes, looking at light, shadow, and color, as well as drawing from observation and from images.

SATURDAY CLASSES

The Art of Leadership: The Many Faces of Leadership, Antigoni and Everett Ladd, instructors. Saturday, June 14, 1-4 p.m. This Saturday seminar uses the leadership styles of various civilian and military Civil War role models who stepped up to responsibility and leadership. Seminar uses case studies and team discussion. Included are Frederick Douglass, Clara Barton, Walt Whitman, and Robert E. Lee, among others.

Music in the Garden, Grades K-3, Anthony Messano, Instructor. Saturdays, June 21 and 28, 9-11 a.m. This delightful introductory music-and-art class combines simple children’s songs with images and drawings the children will create.

Art-Clay Silver Jewelry-Making, Michele Quattrochi, Instructor. Saturday, June 28, 1-5 p.m. Using Art Clay Silver, a moldable clay composed of .999 percent fine silver particles that can be shaped, textured, dried, fired and polished, students will create either a pair of earrings or a pendant.

KID’S SUMMER ART CAMPS

A Way with Words: The Art of Poetry Writing and Performance

Level: Students entering grades 7-9

Time: June 23-27, 1-4 p.m.

Instructor: Dana Sauers

Combining creative thought, writing, and performance, young poets and poets-to-be will learn to write poems, then present them individually or collectively, giving voice to their ideas and feelings in ways that support self-esteem and self-confidence.

Drawing and Painting and Sculpture, Oh My!

Level: Ages 5-7

Time: June 30-July 3, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Instructor: Cathleen McGowan

This popular camp teaches students to use their powers of observation and imagination to create one-of-a-kind inventive projects using papier mache, pencils, clay, and tempura paint.

Puppet, Portraits and Masks

Level: Ages 5-7

Time: July 7-11, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Instructor: Emily Knowles-Kellett

Students will create interesting puppets while learning a little about puppetry the world over! They’ll explore symmetry/asymmetry, exaggeration, and color as they create their own masks and puppets.

Hands-On Art Voyage!

Level: Ages 9-12

Time: July 7-11, 1-4 p.m.

Instructor: Emily Knowles-Kellett

Students will create creative artworks while "traveling" to different places and periods in history—India, Southeast Asia, and ancient Egypt and ancient Greece.

Musical Theater: Tricks, Tips & Techniques

Level: 13 and up

Time: July 14-18, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Instructor: Holly Fox

In this camp for theater buffsm students will learn about the audition process, prepare a monologue, work on sight reading and explore dance and songs from Broadway shows. At the end of the week there will be a mini-cabaret for parents and family. Great for teens who love school and community drama productions. Held at the Gettysburg Dance Center, 775 Old Harrisburg Rd.

Fabulous Found-Object Fashion

Level: Ages 8-10

Time: July 14-18, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Instructor: Jill Rakowicz

In this inventive class, students will create wearable art using old fabric, recyclable material, newspapers, magazines, and various other "found" objects. The week will end with a fabulous found-object fashion show!

Designing with Nature

Level: Ages 5-7

Time: July 14-18, 1-4 p.m.

Instructor: Sarah Schaeffer Maclay

This class explores the patterns in nature. Starting with a field excursion to observe and sketch the natural world, students then return to class for basic printmaking and bookbinding using specimens collected on the walk.

Thinking 3-D!

Level: Ages 8-10

Time: July 21-25, 9 a.m-12 p.m.

Instructor: Jill Rakowicz

Students will transform ideas into all shapes and sizes of sculptures--imaginative creatures, flying machines, and found-object paintings. Kids who love to build love thinking 3-D!

Art Exploratorium

Level: Ages 9-14

Time: July 29-August 1, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Instructor: Cathleen McGowan

Students will create art in 2D and 3D as they develop new skills in drawing, painting, carving, and sculpture, working in pencils, charcoal, acrylic paints, watercolors, carving medium, and clay to create a variety of fun and interesting products.

Fashion Illustration

Level: Ages 10-17

Time: July 28 and 29, 1-4 p.m.; July 30, 1-5 p.m.

Instructor: Holly McCabe

This class explores the world of fashion illustration through a variety of media and illustration techniques. Using both realistic and stylistic approaches, students receive intensive instruction and practice drawing the fashion figure from live models and magazine images.
