(2/23) Park commission reappointments

At its February 9 meeting, the Town Council reappointed Commissioner Kitty Baker to the Town of Walkersville Parks Commission. Baker’s term ended in January 2022 and was extended an additional two-year term. It was approved 3-0 with one abstention and one absence.

After Baker’s reappointment, the Council discussed a need to unify the terms for commissioners. Currently, term lengths are different for each commissioner.

Frederick Summer Solstice 8k

Frederick Summer Solstice 8k prepares to hit the road running as the town council approved official road closures.

Blessings in a Backpack Board Vice President Alex Young presented the roads to be impacted including

Frederick Street, Glade Road, and a small portion of Devilbiss Bridge Road.

The roads are expected to be closed June 18 from 7:15 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. with the roads opening back up in phases.

To ease travel, the Frederick Summer Solstice will have seven traffic control officers — two more than last year. Precautions have also been taken to ensure limited bus disruption.

The Town Council approved the road closures with none opposed and offered two mobile signs to alert Walkersville citizens of the road closures during the race.

The Frederick Summer Solstice 8k is the county’s original twilight race and is an annual fundraiser for Blessings in a Backpack in hopes of providing food for children in Frederick County.

Car charging station proposed

Commissioner Liaison Mary Ann Brodie-Ennis brought up the idea to install an electric car charging station in Walkersville at the Town Hall. Brodie-Ennis came up with the idea based on the uptick of electric cars across the country.

Brodie-Ennis emailed nearby Emmitsburg to research more about the charging stations, as they already have one installed. She plans to ask about the town’s usage, cost for maintenance, whether Emmitsburg charges users, and more to gauge the need for one in Walkersville. Another commissioner suggested using the local paper to gauge Walkersville residents’ interest in installing an electric car charging station.

During her research, Brodie-Ennis also found grants available to help cover the costs of the charging station.
