An Emmitsburgian and justly proud of that fact is Mr. J. Elmer Zimmerman, who lives on West Main Street. A retried farmer and a charter member of the
Fairfield First National Bank, Mr. Zimmerman moved to Emmitsburg 27 years ago. He was born February 2, 1863, near the Tract School House. He has been
president of the institution for a long number of years. Mr. Zimmer-man is going into his 89th year.
Quite active for his age and enjoying good health, his keen memory recalls some very interesting anecdotes that occurred during his full life.
In 1901, while attending the Buffalo Exposition, he remembers vividly the assassination of President McKinley. At the time he was in another building
not too far from the incident. And during the last Old Home Week celebration in Emmitsburg in 1909, he recalls the mayor presenting the keys of the town
to Governor Warfield, who attended the gala event.
Mr. Zimmerman leads you to believe he is not an ardent fisherman, mainly because he never had much "luck," but wittingly reminds you that he and
Mr.
Peter Burket, his very close friend, went quite often, and while he got most of the "bites," Mr. Burket seemed to catch the most fish.
Mr. Zimmerman is a member of the Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church.
