Emmitsburg's Civil War Soldiers

Private John Sponcler: 1868 Copy of Discharge

To all whom it may concern:

Know ye that John Sponcler, Private of Captain H. Buckingham Company C, 1st Regiment of Md. P.H.B. Cavalry volunteers, who was enrolled on the twenty seventh day of August one thousand eight hundred and sixty two to serve three years or during the war is hereby discharged from the service of the United States this twenty fifth day of May, 1865, at Martinsburg, West Va. By reason of under provision of G.O. No. 83 A.G.O.C.S. 1865. (No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist.*)

Said John Sponcler was born in Emmittsburg in the State of Maryland, is 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, light hair and by occupation, when enrolled, a Miller.

Given at Martinsburg WV this twenty fifth day of May 1865.

*This sentence will be erased should Commanding the Reg’t there be anything in the conduct or Mustering Officer physical condition of the soldier rendering him unfit for the Army.
